Using 5 double pointed needles, Cast on 72 st and work k1 p1 rib for 12 rows, work even for 24 rows, begin shaping:

(K8, k2 tog) 6 times: 54 st

(K7, k2 tog) 6 times: 48 st

(K4, k2 tog) 6 times: 30 st

Cut yarn leaving 18 inch tail, thread tail onto yarn needle and run through all 12 st 2 or three times for strength, draw tail tight to close top of hat and secure tail inside hat by running through several stitches. Optional: make a small Pom-Pom and use remaining tail yarn to sew on Pom-Pom or just trim remaining yarn tail flush with hat.
